AFLA has been working with Sanctuary Care to increase the use of their gardens for reminiscence therapy and general wellbeing at their care homes.

Taking inspiration from the local area surrounding Iffley, our design incorporates the rich cultural history based on the River Thames, Cowley Motor Plant, May Day celebrations, Saxon origins and athletics. The central sensory garden is based on life by the River Thames, with a boat shed, with oars and weather vane, a small pond enclosed with a rustic oak fence, river bank inspired planting, an artificial grass with two holes for putting, seats, small trees, pergola with wooden oars at the top and bunting. There is trellis cut from external ply with bird, animal and fish shapes. The reminiscence garden is based on Cowley Motor Plant, with a Morris Minor ply silhouette, seating, Oxford bus stop signs and references to the first 4 minute mile. The horticultural garden has raised beds, fruit trees and seating.

In 2014, Iffley House was a finalist in the Pinders “Best Dementia Home – Large” awards.
