In 2010, AFLA was appointed to design the Foundation Stage playground at Knowle Park Primary School, Bristol. The construction of this project took place in August 2011 in readiness for the school re-opening for the autumn term in September 2011. Our initial concept began with the school's 'water theme' for class names; incorporating this idea, the playground tells the story of the Atlantic salmon and the migration from river to ocean. The children are taken along the imaginary stream, through an alpine meadow and flower garden, a birch and conifer woodland with rounded boulders and logs plus a wooden climbing trail. The playground has been zoned to enable different types of activity and artificial grass has been used for the grass areas.
